£10,000 raised in cycle ride
An annual cycle ride arranged by East London RFC’s Honorary President Nick Bracken OBE has raised almost £10,000 for charity.
On Saturday (22 August) Nick led a group that rode almost 90 miles between Harold Wood in Essex and Mundford in Norfolk in aid of the Atlas Foundation, which helps deprived children move from poverty towards a better future through the power of rugby.
Nick was joined on the ride by 26 of his colleagues from the Silver Hippos Rugby Club, a non-playing social and fundraising group he founded. Amongst the group were East London RFC members Simon Crick, Honorary Life Vice-President; Club Captain and player Andy Davenport; management committee member and East London Vixens player Deepti Davenport; Vice-Presidents Kim Bromley-Derry and Mark Warwick; and club sponsors Roy Strickland, Paul Richards and Eugene Marais.
The cycling Hippos started at Harold Wood Park before crossing parts of Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire towards their final stop in Norfolk.
This year, as well as raising money for the Atlas Foundation, they dedicated the ride to fellow Hippo Dave Armond CBE, an East London RFC Vice-President who died in April. Dave’s granddaughter Nina waved the riders off at the start together with Nick’s granddaughters Juno and Evie.
The Atlas Foundation has benefited 278,000 children across 21 countries and raised more than £6million. The Silver Hippos visited one of the Foundation's projects in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2018 where they met the organisation's founder, England rugby legend Jason Leonard, as well as the national rugby team.
East London president Nick, the elected member for Essex County on the Rugby Football Union Council, is also the Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Havering. His role forms part of the Greater London Lieutenancy, supporting King Charles III and the Royal Family in their duties alongside promoting the work of uniformed and voluntary services, faith groups and charitable organisations.
Nick said: “Having witnessed the great work the Atlas Foundation does in making young lives better, I am proud to be able to arrange this annual ride with my Silver Hippos and East London colleagues to support them. I thank everyone who donated generously in terms of sponsorship money and in precious time to make it all happen safely.”
