Champions blown away in barnstorming final game

East London Ladies rounded off their league season with a 55-5 victory over league champions Wymondham Wasps Ladies and in doing so ended their opponents’ unbeaten run for the season.
The victory at the Memorial Ground in West Ham on Sunday (19 March) cemented the Ladies in third position in their first season in Women’s National Championship South East North 1 division.
East London, using a strong wind to their advantage, struck first on 14 minutes when left wing Kate Webb broke down the right to score under the posts. Prop Sam Leetch converted.
Ten minutes later following good work from prop Christine Kizito, flanker Aoife Scully scored but the conversion was missed. On the half-hour right wing Amanda Farrow broke down the left and fed inside to fly-half Meg Ryder whose sublime pass out of the side of her right hand allowed number eight Shavoune Mills to score. Leetch converted and added a penalty on the stroke of half-time to leave the visitors shell-shocked at 22-0.
Any hope that Wymondham had of using the wind in their favour disappeared on 50 minutes. Scully turned defence into attack and was only halted by a high tackle near the line for which a Wasps player was yellow carded. Leetch kicked the resultant penalty to the corner and from the line out, Ryder touched down and Leetch converted.
On the hour and on 66 minutes, darting runs from scrum-half Aoife Farrell resulted in tries. Leetch converted one and the other looked to be going through the uprights until the wind intervened.
Two more tries from replacements Lucinda Thomas and Rachel King, the latter a fine burst from 30 metres out, plus two conversions, took the East London score above 50. Wymondham scored an unconverted try with the final move of the match.
Skipper Ciara: “Ending the unbeaten run of the league champions is a great way to end the season. It was a great performance and shows how far we have come.”
