Five tries and a solid defensive shift when down to 13 players in the second-half saw East London Vixens beat Romford & Gidea Park Ravens 31-0 at the Memorial Ground in West Ham on Sunday (24 November).
Flanker Katie Hasret Gemal opened the Vixens account on seven minutes with a fine individual burst to the line. She converted her own try. (7-0). A break from Gemal set up the second try six minutes later for prop Kat Salthouse which Gemal again converted (14-0).
On 21 minutes an offload from Gemal set up inside centre Belinda Walter for the game’s third try, though the conversion was missed (19-0). It was followed two minutes later by a try from fly-half Sukie Young. The conversion was again missed (24-0).
If the first half was about East London’s attacking superiority, the second period was about their defensive capabilities as Romford had the better of both possession and territory. The home cause was not helped when replacements Lucy Thomas and Beth Langdon received yellow cards within six minutes of each other.
Solid defence by the 13 players kept Romford at bay and from a defensive turnover on their own line with two minutes remaining, full back Rachel Edmead ran the length of the pitch with ball in hand to score under the posts. Gemal converted (31-0).
The win moves the Vixens up to second place in Women’s National Challenge 1 East behind leaders Hackney Ladies.
