EAST LONDON WYVERNS WIN MERIT TABLE

Victors in Shepherd Neame Essex Merit Table Division Three

East London Rugby Club’s Wyverns squad won the Shepherd Neame Essex Merit Table Division Three title on Saturday with a 21-13 win away at Upminster on Saturday.
With nearest rivals Old Cooperians losing their match it meant the East London 2s side cannot be caught at the top of the league with two matches remaining.
Two tries from fly-half Alan Ferguson, who contributed 16 points to the winning total, and another try from blindside flanker Niall Buckley were enough to beat Upminster on their sloping pitch.
The final score flattered the home side who scored a try in the final seconds of the game. East London also had a score chalked off in unusual circumstances. Replacement Troy Hinds crossed the try line but was judged to have overrun the very small in-goal area behind the posts at Upminster’s Hall Lane ground.
East London Wyverns skipper John Wright said: “To have won the league with two games still to go is a good feeling. I would like to congratulate all the players who have contributed to our great season.”
They hope to continue their good from and secure the double by winning the final of the Plate competition, which is contested by the top four teams in the league.

The East London 1st XV were less successful and lost 0-79 to Epping Upper Clapton at the Memorial Ground in West Ham. Epping, who are second in Essex League 1, ran in 13 tries.
