Wyverns start New Year with a win.

Jon Barratt

First win of 2012 for East London 2's

East London Wyverns, packed their bags and passports this week, and headed to the south side of Old Father Thames. Old Shootershillians were the opposition.

From the Kick off East London made their intentions known. A good run from the centre partnership of Joe Kelly & Dillon Bensley sent second row Simon Waldeck in under the posts, dan bracken kicked the extras 0-7 to the visitors.

East London had what was one of many poor restarts, but showed some good defensive skills against some big strike runners from Shoots. The first scrum of the game resulted in a penalty to the Wyverns and a line out 10m from the opposition try line. Good line out work from Ricky Buckfield & Haider Kamuss put Jim Crick high into the air to secure possession, Dan Bracken made a trade mark bullocking run and the resulting ruck saw East London penalised for hands in the ruck. Shoots used their heavier forwards to drive over for their opening score 5-7.

East London again conceded a penalty from the restart, Shoots spilled the ball from turnover and East London broke again but a loose pass resulted in the Shootershillians 7 breaking 4 tackles to score, 10-7.

From the restart the Wyverns dominated possession, from a ruck Fly half Billinghurst dummied and sprinted to the line 10-12.

The restart was again a bit messy and from the resulting 10m scrum, good play from the East London centres resulted in Kieran scoring in the Left corner 10-17.

A solid restart possession sent Kieran again making ground, passed to Jim Crick who showed good footwork to wrong foot the defence and out pace the defence to score under the posts. 10-22, Dan bracken added the extras 10-24.

The final action of the half saw Ryan Billinghurst & Kieran tackling one of the Fijian runners just short of the line.

East London received the ball from the kick off & knocked on. The home side upped their game from this point & had by far the better of the opening exchanges. A scrum on East Londons 5m line, was picked up by the shoots 8 who drove over conversion was kicked, 17-24.

Both sides worked hard to gain the advantage. A 5m scrum saw East use good hands, bringing play to the left side of the field, with few options Substitute fly half Wally Scott put in an excellent crossfield kick for Kieran to chase, outstrip the defence and score his second try, 17-29.

Shootershillians worked hard to turn over ball and scored under the posts the conversion was a formality, 24-29.

Simon Waldeck took responsibility for the restart & drove his opposite number back 15m from the restart, this kept East London in the pressure zone. Good hands resulted in a try for Joe Kelly, 24-34.

Old Shoots scored from the restart 29-34.

The final quarter saw some excellent work from both the East London forwards and backs working in harmony together which resulted in tries for Nick Parrott and Dillon Bensley.

Final score was 51-29 to East London.

Man of the Match was James Dicker for his organisational skills from fullback and direct running into the line.

Dick of the Day went to Wally Scott & Nick Parrott for pre-match poor time keeping.
