East London, travelled to Ilford Wanderers, bouyed by a good win last week. As usual this was a very mixed squad, which was only confirmed as we were leaving the Memorial ground.
East London kicked off to the home side and put pressure on Ilford straight away. But good driving around the fringes saw the home side work their way up the field, maintaining posession through their strong forwards.A yellow card was given to the visitors centre for a dangerous tackle.
East london managed to turn over some good ruck ball, but were out mauled by the home side consistantly. Ilford again worked their way up into the visitors 22 and from a penalty managed to break the visitors defence and scored. 5-0.
From the restart East London worked hard to put pressure on the home side, keeping control of the ball was key, and eventually Ilford infringed. John Higginson on only his second game for the club, this season kicked the points. 5-3.
From the restart East London, put the ball through the hands, and after some good work at the breakdown, put the left winger in at the corner.5-8.
The second half saw Ilford start with renewed efforts, which resulted in them again breaching the East London line. 10-8. this was the wake up call that the visitors needed. A penalty awarded to the visitors, was taken quickly by Kelly, who sprinted away to score.10-13. the conversion was missed.
East London continued to make good progress from turn over ball, with Deszo and Kelly making breaks. Sustained pressure on the home sides 5 metre line saw Higginson go over for a score from close range. 10-18. The conversion was kicked by Greig. 10-20.
Another score was added by another new player, from our back line. 10-25. Again converted by higginson 10-27.
Ilford worked hard in the last few minutes and pressured the visitors. Just as full time was looming Ilford got another penalty whivh they ran. East London's defence held firm, but not always within the law. Two further yellows were awarded by the Referee. We were now well into over time and the visitors were awarded a penalty. Unfortunatly this didn't go to touch. Ilford launched another attack which saw them turned over in mid-field. East London nearly scored again, but a knock-on saw the game end.
East London 3's now wait to see who & where they play in the Merit League semi-final next week.
